Theatre

The theatre will be completely remodelled with enhanced facilities. This means that Weymouth & Portland will have a new theatre, unrecognisable from what exists today. This presents an opportunity to create a new reputation that can embrace a wider cultural programme and meet the needs of 21st Century Weymouth as well as aspirations of a new generation of visitors.

It will house a minimum of 900 people and provide far superior facilities, including meeting DDA requirements for the less able in the community. Managed effectively, it could become a conference venue with conferences linked to the new hotel.

Remodelling involves stripping the building to its structural framework, and removing elements of the roof, walls and floors. The building is rebuilt around the framework, in several phases which will ensure the minimum closure period. All internal spaces will be brand new and enhanced with additional facilities.

The new theatre will be designed to be more efficient to reduce the cost in subsidy for the tax payers in Weymouth & Portland. Efficiency will be achieved through the use of sustainable materials to reduce energy consumption and by co-sharing the new core facilities e.g. lift, toilets and catering, between the Theatre, community space and World Heritage Visitor Centre.
