Finding a preferred development partner In February 2005, the council began a national search for a development partner and interested parties were required to register their interest to participate in a competitive selection process by 18th March. In early March 2005 a ‘Pride in Weymouth’ study showed that three quarters of respondents wanted the Pavilion to continue but be managed more efficiently and more than half wanted a new large, quality hotel. Ed Matts, South Dorset Conservative parliamentary spokesman, said at the time: "People are right to be proud of Weymouth. It is a great town, but it has so much more to offer if only we can take advantage of it. But we also need a bold vision and the people to make it happen." On 22nd March, the Dorset Echo announced that eight developers had expressed interest in redeveloping the Weymouth Pavilion & Ferry Terminal site. Two were from local businessmen and six from national companies. Four made it to the shortlist including Crest Nicholson (South West) Ltd, Howard Holdings, Urban Catalyst Carillion LLP and Giant GR Limited. In early April, Crest Nicholson pulled out and was replaced by Parkridge Developments. On the 10th of May, concept designs produced by the four short-listed developers were unveiled and exhibited in various locations over four weeks to encourage public engagement and feedback. In addition, the four were asked to submit financial and company information to the council by a specific deadline, after which a detailed financial interview took place. |
