04 July 2008 Plans for Weymouth Pavilion and Ferry Terminal Site to be unveiled to the Public The Mulberry Centre, Commercial Road, Weymouth Thursday 17th to Saturday 19th July 2008 Developer Howard Holdings is to unveil its plans for the redevelopment of Weymouth’s 10-acre Pavilion and ferry terminal site at a three-day public exhibition to be held at The Mulberry Centre, Commercial Road, Weymouth, from 17th – 19th July 2008. Visitors will have the opportunity to view plans, drawings and illustrations before Howard Holdings submits its formal planning application to Weymouth & Portland Borough Council at the beginning of August 2008. Representatives from the Howard Holdings project team will also be available to answer questions and explain the design principles underpinning their proposals. As part of the exhibition, local people will be encouraged to comment on the plans, so that their views can be considered prior to the submission of the formal application. The proposed scheme has been developed in response to Weymouth & Portland Borough Council’s approved Development Brief and includes a dynamic mix of retail, leisure, commercial and residential units. Its overall objective is to replace civic amenities and enhance visitor facilities to diversify the summer seasonal trade for local businesses, in turn boosting the local economy and helping to secure Weymouth’s future as one of the UK’s leading centres for marine excellence. As well as creating around 400 jobs, the proposals, if approved, would result in a wide range of new facilities for the town, including space for a World Heritage Centre, a significantly improved ferry terminal, a new covered car park, Weymouth’s first four-star hotel set within a new public square, a new beachside performance space, and an ‘entertainment quarter’ which incorporates public open spaces, restaurants, cafés, bars as well as a shopping area. Weymouth’s Pavilion Theatre would also be completely remodelled and refurbished to update both backstage and front-of-house facilities, including a new community performance space and venue. Speaking about the exhibition, Gary Charman, regional director for Howard Holdings, said: “This development has been designed to meet both the current and future needs of the local community. We want to encourage an open and continuing discussion, so are keen to communicate our plans to as many local people as possible. It really is a unique opportunity for local people to help us to shape an exciting, financially sustainable future for a town which already boasts some of the South Coast’s most spectacular natural and built heritage assets. We would therefore urge local people to attend the exhibition and discuss the proposals with our project team.” The opening times for the exhibition are as follows: Thursday, 17th July: 10am – 5:30pm Friday, 18th July: 10am – 6pm Saturday, 19th July: 10am – 6pm If the application is approved, construction is expected to start in spring 2009 and be finished towards the end of 2011. - ends -
