Public space and access The proposed development incorporates large public spaces and extensive walkways around and through the site to be enjoyed by everybody. In the proposals so far, there is an outdoor amphitheatre for formal and informal events, which can accommodate up to 400 people. If the amphitheatre itself is used as a stage, 1200 or more people could watch a performance from the beach.
A large public square will be able to accommodate seasonal and themed events such as ice skating, exhibitions and entertainers’ events, as well as seasonal, themed or general markets. A market comprising 48 stalls with good circulation space could be housed or one twice this size. As well as the “entertainment quarter” featuring shops, restaurants, cafes and bars there will be significant “public” space at key points to encourage public participation and community based activities including a new public pier extending into the bay. The map below shows areas it is proposed will be public access, including the New Pier giving outstanding vistas currently only available from the sea and a new location for keen sea anglers.
