In order to be truly sustainable, a landmark scheme needs to include components which encourage a healthy live:work balance.

So, what is included in the scheme?

The proposals that we are putting forward include:

  • Renewed and strengthened sea defences
  • The remodelling and refurbishment of the Pavilion Theatre, including a new community performance space
  • Space for a new World Heritage Visitor Centre/Exhibition Space
  • A new and improved ferry terminal facility
  • The construction of Weymouth's first four-star, 140 bedroom hotel
  • A new outdoor beachside performance space
  • A dynamic new 'entertainment quarter' featuring shops, restaurants, café/bars and public open spaces
  • Contemporary new office and commercial spaces
  • Approximately 340 private residential apartments
  • Covered car-parking with 400 public spaces
  • 110+ new affordable homes for local people
  • A new public pier extending into the bay
  • A new 290-berth marina

Some of these elements are required by Weymouth & Portland Borough Council as part of the approved Development Brief. The private and commercial elements are needed to fund the scheme.

In this way, civic amenities such as the new sea defences, remodelled theatre, affordable homes and public spaces are funded by private investment, rather than the public purse.

This model of public/private partnership is actively encouraged by Government as a means of delivering large-scale projects. The intention is to reinvigorate Weymouth's historic seafront and ensure its active life for generations to come.
